Small town, textile roots
China Grove was incorporated on March 11, 1889. According to the town, it's named for a grove of chinaberry trees that grew beside the old train depot. Before that, the area went by Savits Mill and then Lutherville. In 1896 it got North Carolina's first Rural Free Delivery mail route, only the second in the country.
The town grew up around the Patterson Manufacturing Company cotton mill, built in 1893, and the mill village around it. The China Grove Roller Mill at 308 N. Main Street is on the National Register of Historic Places and is now run as a museum by Rowan Museum.
Today it's a quiet town with a short, walkable Main Street, a town park with a covered stage, and quick access to I-85. Salisbury is to the north, and Landis and Kannapolis are just to the south.

Established China Grove neighborhoods
Millers Grove
One of the newer resale neighborhoods in town, with homes built from about 2015 to 2018. A good option if you want a newer home without the builder wait.
Wellington Estates
Homes built around 2006. A settled neighborhood with a little more age than the newer communities in town.
Castlebrooke Farms
Larger homes, and one of the places to look in China Grove if you want more square footage.
Other neighborhoods with China Grove addresses include Barnhardt Meadows, Chinaberry Place, Fisher Farm Estates, Forest Pines and Dogwood Estates. Older homes in and around the original mill village and downtown come up too.
Schools, parks and events
- Schools: Rowan-Salisbury Schools. South Rowan High (1655 Patterson Street) and Jesse C. Carson High (290 Kress Venture Drive) both serve the China Grove area, along with China Grove Elementary and China Grove Middle. Check the exact address with the district.
- Parks: Hanna Park on North Main Street has a covered stage and a Vietnam memorial. The town also runs Community Memorial Park, Cannon Recreational Ballpark, Village Grove Park and Westhaven Park.
- Farmers Day: the town's big summer festival on Main Street. The 45th Farmers Day was held July 17–18, 2026.
- Around town: the China Grove Roller Mill museum, the South Rowan Regional Library, and holiday events like Christmas in the Grove.
